IRCTC website has started with the service of booking train tickets in India by using international debit and credit cards. Now, Foreigners and NRIs would be able to book tickets with the bank cards online through IRCTC website.
Earlier, the IRCTC ticket booking portal only accepted American Express International Credit Cards. International travelers only had the option of American Express (AMEX) Payment Gateway as other international cards were not accepted. IRCTC will now permit other international credit and debit cards issued outside the country for booking of e-tickets through its ticketing website. The necessary changes in the system have been made to enable global transactions.
The popular trains with foreigners are the Buddhist circuit trains, luxury trains like ‘Palace on Wheels‘, ‘Maharajas’ Express’ and other tourist specials. Usually these tickets were booked through tour operators, but now they can be also be booked online with international bank cards.
Once the required system gets operational on the IRCTC ticketing site, global transactions for ticket bookings will increase on the website. At present, the IRCTC ticketing website is currently equipped to take the capacity of 15,000 tickets in a minute, which means 250 tickets in a second. At present, about 58% of total train tickets in India sold are booked online.
